Struggling to Make a Big Career Decision?

As a career coach, I hear from people all the time who are struggling to make a big career decision.

Some are wondering if they should go for that new job or stay where they are.

Some are trying to decide if it’s time to make the leap and start their own business.

And some are trying to decide if the job offer in front of them is THE ONE they should accept.

If this is you, let me first acknowledge this feels hard because it IS hard.

It’s hard to make big decisions. It’s hard to wrestle with uncertainty and fear of making the wrong decision.

When faced with big decisions, our analytical brain loves to take over.

It wants to weigh all the logistics, to review (and RE-reveiw) the salary, the benefits, the vacation time, the title, the commute, the job responsibilities, etc. etc. We ask everyone and their mother for their opinions.

We analyze, scrutinize, agonize.

But, here’s what I want to offer you: the answer you’re searching for is already inside of you.

As Glennon Doyle teaches, you just have to get quiet enough, and brave enough to listen.

Here’s an exercise I invite you to try to uncover your answer:

  1. Make a list of your non-negotiables. Get those important logistics out of your brain and down on paper once and for all. Is there a bare minimum salary you need to make ends meet? A maximum amount of time that you’re willing to commute? Get those crucial pieces down so you know what you can and can’t compromise on.

  2. Next, write down your top 5 values. Not just your values about your career - your values in life.

  3. Write down your top 5 strengths. These don't have to be related to your current role - just things you're good at (ex: connecting with people, detail oriented, working with your hands, etc.)

  4. Write down your top 5 passions. Things that light you up and give you life. These can be a blend of passions inside and outside of work.

  5. Now, choose the top 2 things from steps 2-4. These are your 6 Zones of Greatness and your path to a fulfilling career & life.

Finally, run your career options through your non-negotables list and your Zones of Greatness.

How well does each opportunity align with your list?

The answer becomes clearer once you know what your path to fulfillment looks like.
