I’m a Career Coach Who Doesn’t Believe in the Idea of a Dream Job

I know this sounds weird, but I’m a career coach who doesn’t buy into the idea of a dream job.

Here’s why:

I think most people think of a dream job as a single, fixed role that checks all their boxes.

Here are 3 reasons why I believe the idea of a dream job doesn’t actually let us dream big enough:

1. The idea of a “dream job” closes us off to new potential opportunities. Let’s say you’ve got a really specific dream job in mind - like a specific role at a specific company - complete with your ideal paycheck and office set up… While it’s awesome to have big, ambitious, clear goals, having your heart set on one role and one path to get there can close you off to opportunities all around you and can limit your growth and progress.
   

2. The idea of a “dream job” is a fixed idea and life is fluid. I believe your idea of a dream job can and WILL change throughout your lifetime. As we grow, our interests change, our season of life changes, our wants and desires evolve - so, what’s a dream for right now may not be your dream 3, 5, 10 years from now.
   

3. Goal getters don’t have a final destination. High achieving, growth oriented people rarely reach a goal without setting their sights on what’s next. So, I don’t believe a dream job is a final destination - more like a fulfilling step along the way.

I think dreaming big in your career is certainly something to strive for.

In fact, I think it’s what you deserve.

So, instead of searching for your dream job, here’s what I invite you to do instead…

Define your dream work day:

• What type of environment are you working in?

• What kind of work are you doing?

• Who are you surrounded by?

• What does your schedule look like?

• How are you spending your family / personal time ?

Then, make a list of ways to cultivate more of those ideals into your day STARTING RIGHT NOW.


What’s great about this is you can start to cultivate more of your dream job elements into your everyday life NOW.


You can stay open to new opportunities that you might not have considered before.

New paths and new positions may reveal themselves to you.

And you’ll be cultivating dream moments each step of the way.
